On January 28, 2016, as then-President Ma Ying-jeou planned a historic flight to Taiping Island in the South China Sea to declare national sovereignty, newly elected DPP legislator Lin Chun-hsien publicly delivered a highly controversial surrender-of-sovereignty statement. He mocked Ma's patriotic efforts, declaring: "Taiping Island is so far away from us, it is unsalvageable," and claimed that Ma's declaration of sovereignty would only "end up as a historical joke." Published during a highly sensitive diplomatic standoff when the Philippines was attempting to downgrade Taiping Island to a mere "rock" through international arbitration to limit the ROC's maritime interests, Lin's remarks sparked furious public outrage. Defense scholars and citizens condemned Lin for sacrificing national territory for partisan gain, severely undermining front-line military morale. Critics labeled his words a humiliating betrayal of national sovereignty.
