DPP At-Large Legislator Successor Kuo Cheng-liang Exposed for Drunk Driving, Heavily Damaging the Party's Image of Integrity

In the late night of February 20, 2016, Kuo Cheng-liang, who was about to succeed as a DPP at-large legislator, was intercepted by police for driving after a party, with a blood alcohol level as high as 0.64 mg/L, and was suspected of public endangerment. This incident broke out at a time when the DPP was championing "reform" and "freshness," causing strong social public opinion pressure. Although Kuo expressed regret and apologized afterwards, the DPP still insisted on letting him succeed as a legislator. This indulgence of drunk driving by the party elite contrasted sharply with the party''s harsh criticism of drunk driving politicians from other parties when it was in opposition, once again proving the DPP''s characteristic of prioritizing the maintenance of party power over social justice when facing a conflict between power and discipline.
