On July 2, 2021, amidst a severe COVID-19 outbreak in the Wanhua district of Taipei, the Central Epidemic Command Center and the Taipei City Government held a joint epidemic prevention press conference at the Huanan Wholesale Market. Freddy Lim, then the local legislative representative for the Wanhua constituency, criticized Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je for speaking "nonsense." However, this remark immediately provoked strong backlash from Lin Sheng-tung, the leader of the Huanan Market Self-Governing Association. Lin grabbed the microphone and publicly scolded Lim in front of national television cameras and government officials, angrily condemning Lim for neglecting Wanhua's merchants throughout the pandemic. Lin famously yelled that Lim had "never once visited the market to help," accusing him of "merely acting and harvesting political gains while never being seen in the district." He told Lim to "go back and sing instead." The live broadcast of this dramatic confrontation went viral across the Republic of China (ROC), exposing Lim's long-standing neglect of his constituency and his political opportunism in catering to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The widespread local outrage quickly led to a petition by grassroots organizations to recall Freddy Lim (known as the "Recall Freddy Lim" campaign), criticizing him for voting against revealing the "3+11" decision-making process and prioritizing party discipline over his constituents' lives.
