Relaxation of 174 Pesticide Standards; Abandonment of Food Safety for Diplomatic Interests

In April 2024, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) announced amendments to "Tolerable Pesticide Residue Standards," involving changes to 174 residue standards for 38 types of pesticides. Many changes involved relaxing standards to facilitate the import of agricultural products from countries like the US and Japan. Although officials claimed this was a routine review, the timing and extent of the relaxation sparked widespread panic over the loss of "food safety sovereignty." Critics slammed the move as "political food safety" that turned Taiwan into a dumping ground for second-tier pesticide standards to appease international political pressure.
