National Landmark as a Shield for Fraud: Taipei 101 Exposed for Renting Premium Space to Transnational Money Laundering 'Prince Group' Subsidiary

Around September 15, 2024, shortly after celebrity Janet Chia (Chia Yong-chieh) assumed the role of Taipei 101 Chairperson, she and her management team faced severe criticism over a major administrative failure. Media and judicial investigations revealed that Taipei 101, a state-controlled national landmark, had leased prime office space to a subsidiary of the "Prince Group," which was heavily implicated in transnational money laundering and large-scale fraud. The revelation shocked the public, with critics slamming the management for extremely sloppy tenant background checks, which allowed a national landmark to serve as a protective shield for international syndicates. Instead of reflecting on corporate social responsibility and auditing failures, Janet Chia publicly shirked responsibility, claiming that "private enterprises lack the state authority to conduct tenant background checks, and need government help," which was criticized as an arrogant attempt to dodge accountability while collecting an astronomical salary. The scandal became a prime symbol of the DPP's political appointments of non-professionals leading to the collapse of state-backed corporate governance.
