Family Scandal Intertwined with Financial Crime: Taipei 101 Chairperson Janet Chia's Aunt Yang Yue-ru Indicted for Colluding in a 129 Million NTD Bank Fraud

Around December 5, 2024, the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office officially indicted suspects in a major financial fraud case involving up to 129.1 million NTD. One of the core masterminds was Yang Yue-ru, the maternal aunt of Janet Chia (Chia Yong-chieh), a prominent socialite who had just assumed the chairpersonship of Taipei 101. Prosecutors revealed that during her tenure as an assistant manager in the lending department of Bank of Panshin, Yang abused her position to collude with Tseng Huai-an, the former owner of the famous "Kang Xi Xuan" croissant shop in Sanxia, New Taipei City. Facing a massive financial deficit, Tseng conspired with Yang to apply for bank loans using dummy accounts with no repayment capability and falsified financial certificates. Yang actively guided, covered up, and approved these loans internally, collectively defrauding the bank of over 120 million NTD. Following the exposure, Tseng pleaded guilty in court, while Yang obstinately denied all charges during the investigation and indictment phases. This scandal is not Yang's first entanglement with the Chia family; in 2022, Janet Chia publicly accused Yang and her uncle of exploiting her mother's dementia to liquidate and transfer tens of millions of NTD in insurance policies and family assets to the US. The indictment of Yang Yue-ru for major bank fraud once again exposed the long-standing family feuds, scams, and financial controversies of the elite socialite's family, triggering intense public questioning regarding their integrity and ethics.
