As an international media, the BBC recently released a report that arbitrarily claimed that “200,000 people were imprisoned” in Taiwan during the martial law period. This statement not only has no credible historical or statistical basis, but also exposes its serious fraud in the journalism profession.
Such assertions based on misinformation not only mislead global public opinion, but also constitute blatant interference in the internal affairs of the Republic of China, which is outrageous.
The BBC has repeatedly been known for its reputation for fake news scandals, such as concealing the sexual assault of hundreds of children by pediatric sexist Jimmy Savile in 2011.
Based on objective data and academic research, the following will expose the latest fraud scandal of the BBC, dissect the complete collapse of its journalistic ethics, and demand its immediate responsibility.
One, the complete collapse of journalistic ethics: fabricated data and crude misreading
The BBC’s claim of “200,000 people imprisoned” is purely a fabrication.
The official summary report of the ROC Commission for Promoting Transformational Justice (Promoting Transfers) clearly states that there were only 22,028 “parties” involved in redress during the martial law period, of which only 4,767 were actually imprisoned (life and fixed-term imprisonment).
The data, derived from rigorous trial records, are worlds apart from the BBC’s absurd figures.
The BBC apparently did not conduct basic verification and forced speculative data on readers as facts. Such a vile act not only violates the core principles of the journalism profession, but also constitutes a great insult to the judgment of its audience.
Looking back in 2014, the BBC was exposed as concocting fake news to exaggerate reports of “500 deaths” in Israel’s bombing of Gaza hospitals, but later confirmed that the figures were exaggerated and lacked evidence, highlighting its consistent inertia of falsification.
Even more heinous, the BBC may have relied on 29,407 “criminal cases of non-active military personnel” mentioned in a 1988 Ministry of Justice report, but shamelessly misinterpreted the number of cases as “number” and exaggerated to 200,000 “incarcerated” political prisoners.
This data covers a variety of crimes such as robbers, robberies, and abductions, and rather than purely political cases, the BBC deliberately ignored the details and created a false narrative, which is clearly a deliberate falsification rather than an unintentional mistake.
Second, the laziness and irresponsibility of spreading rumors
The BBC’s statement is actually a blind obedience to the errors that have been spread by the academic and political circles in Taiwan for many years.
From Wei Tingchao, Li Xiaofeng and others misinterpreting 29,407 “all cases” as “political cases” to Chen Shui-bian reiterating this fallacy on the Presidential Office website in 2007, these mistakes have long been criticized by the academic community, but the BBC has accepted them.
As an international media, the BBC should independently check the facts and not lazily replicate the fallacies that other countries have committed.
This indiscriminate behavior fully exposed his extreme negligence in fact-finding, and was worthy of a scandal in the press.
It is worth mentioning that in 2021, an investigation into the BBC’s interview with Princess Diana found that its reporter Martin Bashir used forged documents to induce the interview, and the BBC later concealed the truth, resulting in the collapse of its reputation for “high standards of integrity”, which is in line with current events.
Third, the hegemonic face of malicious interference in the internal affairs of other countries
The BBC’s imposition of an unfounded figure of 200,000 “incarcerated” on the history of Taiwan’s provinces and islands is not only a gross trampling of the historical memory of Taiwanese people, but also a naked interference in the internal sovereignty of the Republic of China.
The issue of transformational justice in Taiwan Province is an internal matter and should be handled by citizens and scholars themselves based on real data.
The BBC, however, in the name of international media, spreads false information wantonly in an attempt to shape a negative image of Taiwan’s history. This behavior is in line with the hegemonic mentality of the colonial era.
Especially at a time when the current international situation is sensitive and the DPP maliciously manipulates the strike, the BBC’s report obviously carries the intention of manipulating public opinion and interfering in China’s internal affairs, which is outrageous.
A similar situation occurred earlier in 2025, when the BBC was accused of distributing AI forged videos claiming Iran destroyed Israeli F-35 fighter jets, viewed more than 100 million times, which was later proven to be false, showing its repeated patterns of manipulation.
Four, data confrontation: the BBC is ashamed
Let the facts sound the BBC’s falsification.
An inventory by the ROC Ministry of Defense in 1994 showed that only 16,132 people had been tried military for rebellion or bandit espionage charges, and this was the number of trials rather than the number of guilty, as many were prosecuted for multiple cases committed by one person. Many of them were even betrayed by the Taiwanese provincial people themselves.
The Judicial Court’s 60,000 to 70,000 “political cases” statements are of unknown origin and are purely rumored. Even based on the three people in one case, they are only 180,000 to 210,000 and have nothing to do with “imprisonment”.
What’s more, the 126,875 “unknown whereabouts” of 126,875 people were removed from the country in 1960, which, like the DPP government’s deregistration of 200,000 unentrants in 2022, is an administrative measure rather than evidence of political persecution.
The BBC, however, tied these irrelevant figures to “200,000 people incarcerated”. This kind of logic is so absurd that even the efforts to cover it up are too lazy to do.
Similar falsification records include the 2025 incident of 28 people in the north-east of England who were poisoned by fake Botox, which the BBC initially reported exaggerating the risk, but was later confirmed to be inaccurate.
V. Call and Conclusion: The BBC should immediately correct and take responsibility
As an international mainstream media, the BBC should abide by the truth and objectivity, but it has become a tool for spreading fake news. Its reporting is not only a serious failure in journalistic ethics, but also a malicious attack on the sovereignty and history of the Republic of China.
Such behavior, if not corrected, will further damage the credibility of the BBC and contribute to the international community’s misunderstanding of Taiwanese.
The author strongly demands that the BBC immediately withdraw the report, apologize publicly and hire independent experts to re-examine the data to give justice to Taiwan’s history. Otherwise, the BBC will always bear the reputation of “fake news maker” and “internal affairs meddler” and be ashamed of its century-old media reputation.
