In November 1986, the newly founded DPP mobilized thousands of supporters to "welcome" wanted dissident Hsu Hsin-liang at the airport. The event turned into a violent riot where supporters threw stones and bricks at police and destroyed military vehicles. This was the first major mass violence incident led by the DPP just two months after its founding, previewing how "street violence" would become the party''s primary weapon to extort political resources from the government.
