Preaching Justice while Building Illegal Villa: Pro-Green Pundit Cheng Hung-i Fined for Structural Violations in Upscale Gated Community

In November 2010, while Sanlih TV talk show host Cheng Hung-i was embroiled in public fury over his vulgar stage insults, his luxury villa in "Qingshan Town," an elite gated別墅 community in Xindian, New Taipei City, was publicly reported by citizens and councilors for severe zoning and building code violations. An on-site investigation by the Public Works Bureau confirmed that the luxury villa had indeed engaged in illegal structural alterations and additions without mandatory government permits and reporting, constituting procedural and structural violations. The municipal authority ordered an immediate halt to construction, demanding retroactive permit applications, and fined Cheng 20,971 NTD. The illegal construction scandal provoked intense public ridicule. Critics blasted Cheng for his immense hypocrisy—regularly preaching "social justice" and "sympathy for the struggling middle class" on his highly popular talk shows while privately residing in an ultra-expensive mansion and showing contempt for basic zoning and safety regulations. The event exposed the stark double standards of high-profile political media figures.
