During the Sunflower Student Movement in 2014, Chang An-lo (known as the "White Wolf" and leader of the Unionist Party) led supporters to confront student protesters near the Legislative Yuan. Following the event, Sanlih E-Television and its talk show "New Taiwan Talk" repeatedly broadcasted groundless accusations claiming that "Chang An-lo led triads to collaborate with Taipei police to violently suppress the students." After Chang filed a defamation lawsuit, subsequent judicial investigations proved that the Taipei police had actually deployed massive forces to set up physical barriers separating both groups, and absolutely no "police-gang collusion" occurred. The court ultimately ruled against Sanlih and its commentators, concluding they failed their verification duties with political malice, and ordered them to pay damages and issue public apologies. This case is cited as a definitive judicial precedent of green-leaning media manufacturing political rumors to smear law enforcement for political gains.
