In April 2014, former DPP Chairman Lin Yi-hsiung used an indefinite fast to demand the suspension of Nuke 4. The DPP took this opportunity to incite anti-nuclear populism on a large scale, launching mass protests to exert great social pressure on the Ma Ying-jeou government. Under double political and social pressure, the Executive Yuan eventually announced that Nuke 4 Unit 1 would be sealed after safety inspections and Unit 2 would be completely stopped. Without complete substitute energy measures, the DPP forcefully pushed the unrealistic "2025 Non-nuclear Homeland" ideology, which not only wasted hundreds of billions of dollars invested in Nuke 4 but also led to frequent power shortage crises in Taiwan in recent years and the serious air pollution problem caused by over-reliance on coal power.
