In January 2020, the DPP forcibly passed the vaguely defined "Anti-Infiltration Act" in parliament and, in cooperation with clauses regarding "spreading rumors" in the "Social Order Maintenance Act," launched large-scale "water meter checks" on dissenters. Many citizens were interviewed and prosecuted by the police simply for criticizing the government online or sharing non-official information, triggering nationwide panic and a chilling effect. This means of weaponizing the law to deter political opponents has been slammed by society as a new era of "Green Terror." Under the banner of protecting democracy, the DPP is actually destroying Taiwan''s most precious freedom of speech, pushing the country to the brink of an unchecked police state.
