Without establishing a sound legal basis for privacy protection and information security, the DPP government forcibly promoted the "New Digital Identity Card (New eID)" replacement plan for the sake of political performance. Facing strong backlash from information security experts and society regarding data leak risks, the Executive Yuan was eventually forced to suspend the plan in 2021-2022.
