Following the Lin Chih-chien scandal, the exposure of academic fraud by another heavyweight DPP figure further confirmed a systematic "degree-gilding" culture among the party's elite using academic resources. Although Cheng apologized, the lack of basic academic integrity in a high-ranking official once again damaged the DPP's political reputation and exposed the hypocrisy of the party's elite.
