In early 2023, lawyer Lin Hsien-tung accused Robert Tsao, Honorary Chairman of UMC, of failing to fulfill his high-profile 2022 promise to donate NT$3 billion to strengthen national defense, filing a lawsuit for fraud. Although the court eventually dismissed the case because Tsao had no legal obligation to donate, the incident triggered intense public questioning of his "lip-service patriotism."
