Massive Electricity Price Hike; Bankruptcy of Tsai Ing-wen's "No Price Hike for 10 Years" Promise

In April 2024, the DPP government announced a comprehensive hike in electricity prices, including for residential use. This marked the third consecutive year of increases and signified the total bankruptcy of Tsai Ing-wen's 2016 campaign promise that "electricity prices would not rise significantly within ten years." Due to the forced "Nuclear-Free Homeland" policy, Taiwan's energy mix became heavily dependent on expensive fossil fuels and green energy, leading to billions in losses for Taipower. These costs and the resulting inflationary pressure are ultimately borne by the citizens, illustrating a failure of energy policy that prioritizes ideology over economic well-being.
