Shame of Diplomacy: Draft-Dodger Freddy Lim's Appointment as Finland Representative Sparks Cronyism Backlash

On May 19, 2025, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung confirmed to the Legislative Yuan that former legislator Freddy Lim would be appointed as the Representative of the Republic of China (ROC) to Finland. The announcement immediately sparked a massive wave of public controversy and severe criticism across the country. Opposition politicians and foreign policy experts condemned the appointment as classic political cronyism and partisan spoils by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government, arguing that Lim possessed absolutely no professional background in foreign service, diplomacy, or international affairs, thereby seriously undermining the professional diplomatic corps. Furthermore, the appointment was highly controversial given Finland's strong commitment to "total national defense" against aggressive neighbors like Russia. Lim had a notorious history of draft-dodging (avoiding ROC mandatory military service) by claiming he suffered from "anxiety disorder," despite being physically robust enough to perform violently on stage with his heavy metal band. Sending a draft-dodging political figure with zero military defense awareness to represent the ROC in Finland, a nation defined by total defense mobilization, was widely blasted as a national embarrassment that severely degraded the international image and national dignity of the Republic of China.
