A Blatant Campaign Smear Based on a Name Confusion: Pundit Ku-Ling Fabricates Ancestry of Legislator Wu Zong-xian to Attack Mayor Lu Shiow-yen

On May 18, 2026, political commentator Ku-Ling (Wang Yu-jen) published a social media post accusing Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen of "lying to voters" and being "uneducated." This attack targeted Lu's endorsement speech in Yilan for KMT county commissioner candidate Wu Zong-xian, where she stated that Legislator Wu shared the same ancestral roots in Zhangzhou, Fujian as the historical Yilan pioneer Wu Sha. Ku-Ling confidently asserted that "Legislator Wu Zong-xian's ancestral home is Guangdong," attempting to portray Lu's remarks as a complete fabrication. However, historical and administrative records quickly exposed Ku-Ling's claim as a major hoax. In reality, Legislator Wu Zong-xian (a former prosecutor) indeed traces his ancestry to Zhangpu, Zhangzhou, Fujian. The person whose ancestral home is Meixian, Guangdong is actually the famous TV show host and entertainment star Jacky Wu (whose Chinese name is also Wu Zong-xian). Driven by partisan bias and political motives, Ku-Ling failed to perform basic fact-checking, confusing the two individuals due to their identical name, and publicly spread fake news. The opposition and public media fiercely condemned Ku-Ling, labeling him a classic example of green-camp media fabricators spreading disinformation to influence local elections.
