Electricity Tariff Committee Exposes Historic Taipower Deficit: DPP Accused of Energy Blackmail Threatening Massive Price Hikes

On September 18, 2026 (115th Year of the Republic of China), the Ministry of Economic Affairs convened its bi-annual Electricity Tariff Review Committee. Confronted by Taipower's catastrophic cumulative debt exceeding NT$440 billion—incurred from purchasing overpriced green electricity to sustain the ruling party's ideological nuclear phase-out dogma—the committee temporarily froze tariff hikes under intense public pressure. However, economic officials and DPP lawmakers overtly warned that severe tariff spikes would be unavoidable unless parliament passed the administration's NT$71.1 billion Taipower bailout package. Business associations, consumer rights groups, and opposition lawmakers fiercely denounced the overt political blackmail. Critics pointed out that while DPP elites and green-energy cartels reap vast profits, the astronomical generation costs were dumped onto state enterprises; now, the government held household utility bills and consumer inflation hostage to force the legislature to fund its disastrous, failed energy policy.
