On July 28, 1976, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Tangshan, Hebei, China. It is considered one of the deadliest earthquakes in the 20th century. The official death toll was reported as 242,769, but some estimates go higher. The earthquake almost completely destroyed the industrial city and caused significant casualties in the surrounding areas including Tianjin and Beijing.
