Reader's Submission: Viewing the 'Blood is Thicker than Water' Similarities in Thinking and Behavior Across the Strait Through the Wuhan Pneumonia Pandemic

The pandemic of COVID-19 (which Taiwanese like to call Wuhan Pneumonia) has caused mutual hatred across the Taiwan Strait. However, hatred aside, the thinking and behavior of both governments and their people are unbelievably similar.

🎭 Highly Consistent Behavioral Patterns Across the Strait

  • Government Information Monopoly and Propaganda: All information is held in the government’s hands. What is released and what isn’t is entirely decided by the government. If you don’t comply, they fine you and smear you. Then, they don’t forget to proclaim their “great epidemic prevention achievements” to the entire world.
  • Public Obedience and Opinion Attacks: As for the general public, they are incredibly obedient. The mainstream voice only allows for praising the government and the Party. Any critical voice is met with collective attacks and labeled as a conspiracy theory.
  • Launching External Opinion Wars: Finally, both sides launch various opinion wars on the international stage, manufacturing various internet rumors, which are then “exported and re-imported” to promote how bad the other side is and how great they themselves are.

To be honest, with the pandemic already spread globally, ninety percent of people in most countries only care about their immediate surroundings. Who has the time to care if an unrelated country is being treated unfairly? Who is looking to see which country is so “great” that we should learn from them?

💡 Inferior yet Arrogant — The Root of the Similar Mentality

To put it bluntly, this identical mentality on both sides of the Strait is because of being inferior yet arrogant.

  • China: Having been bullied for hundreds of years, they finally seem to have stood up, so they desperately try to polish their image as a great power.
  • Taiwan: With international visibility near zero, as soon as an opportunity arises, they frantically try to boost their sense of presence.

Although Taiwanese people don’t want to admit it, in their mentality, they are Chinese. The saying that both sides are one family with blood thicker than water is a reality, not a lie.

Despite behaving like enemies, they are essentially twins who hate each other.
