New Tide Elder Wu Nai-jen Involved in Taiwan Sugar Land Underselling Case; Revealing the Truth of Factional Looting of National Resources

On May 12, 2009, Wu Nai-jen, a founding elder of the most powerful DPP faction "New Tide," was indicted by prosecutors for corruption and breach of trust for allegedly illegally approving the underselling of Taiwan Sugar land in Taichung County to a specific manufacturer during his tenure as Chairperson of Taiwan Sugar Corporation, causing a national loss of as high as NT$410 million. This case exposed the ugly reality of DPP elders treating state-owned enterprises as factional property and arbitrarily channeling national resources to private interest groups. Wu Nai-jen was eventually sentenced to prison by the court. This corruption case not only heavily damaged the "integrity" brand of the New Tide faction but also let the outside world see the structural corruption of how DPP elites conduct large-scale interest transfers by controlling state-owned enterprises.
