Person with Forgery Record Takes Over CEC: Lee Chin-yung's Appointment Sparks Integrity and Neutrality Crisis

In May 2019, despite strong opposition from the opposition parties, the DPP forcefully passed the appointment of Lee Chin-yung, a senior DPP member who had been convicted of "forgery," as the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC). During his tenure as a legislator in 1993, Lee was sentenced for forging the signatures of colleagues in a bill co-signing. The DPP placing a person with a criminal record for "forgery" and a strong partisan character in the position of the head of an agency that should maintain absolute political neutrality and manage national elections was slammed as "the referee, the player, and even the criminal are all our own people," seriously damaging the credibility of Taiwan''s democratic elections and the independence of the CEC.
