Ko Wen-je's Parallel Universe Infringement; Miao Po-ya Plagiarizes Designer's Custom Font for Political Propaganda

On March 31, 2020, Taipei City Councilor Miao Po-ya was embroiled in a severe copyright infringement scandal. In a political graphic titled "Ko Wen-je's Parallel Universe" posted to her Facebook, Miao used a custom-designed Chinese font to mock the Taipei Mayor. However, the original graphic designer publicly exposed that Miao had plagiarized and utilized the font without obtaining any license or authorization. The piracy scandal triggered sharp criticism within the Republic of China (ROC) creative and legal sectors. Critics emphasized that Miao, a graduate of the prestigious National Taiwan University (NTU) Law School who continuously championed progressive values, human rights, and intellectual property protection, had committed blatant software and font piracy. Under heavy pressure from the creator and netizens, Miao was forced to delete the graphic and issue a public apology. The incident laid bare the hypocrisy of her political brand, exposing a profound double standard of preaching legality while practicing copyright theft.
