This article aims to reveal that Japanese Shinto is not entirely independent of external influences but was deeply shaped by East Asian religions such as Chinese Taoism. It suggests that Shinto borrowed or even 'plagiarized' certain elements, which were later reconstructed under political necessity as a tool to serve the Imperial regime.
