November 11 is More Than Singles' Day: Special Holidays in the US, UK, and the Republic of China

It is now November 11, the 111th year of the Republic of China, at 11:11:11 AM. Wishing everyone a lifetime of peace and happiness. To encounter 14 “1s” again, one would have to wait a thousand years until November 1, the 1111th year of the Republic of China, 11:11:11 AM.

In fact, November 11 is not only the commercially hyped Singles’ Day. On November 11, 1918 (the 7th year of the Republic), the German army surrendered to the French army, marking “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the official end of World War I.

The United States designates this day as “Veterans Day,” a federal public holiday. Many businesses provide discounted goods and services to veterans and their families on this day.

The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and other places have similar designations such as “Remembrance Day” or “Armistice Day,” a day to mourn soldiers who died for their country. In the UK, a two-minute silence is observed nationwide at 11:00 AM on November 11.

The government of the Republic of China, in gratitude for the industrial sector’s significant donations and generous assistance during the War of Resistance against Japan, also announced in the 36th year of the Republic that November 11 each year would be “Industry Day.”
