During that global wave of anti-communism, the number of communists pursued and killed by European and American governments was actually many times that of our 228 and Martial Law periods combined.
However, the DPP and Taiwan independence advocates have completely distorted the entire 228 incident and the subsequent Martial Law period into a narrative where any Taiwanese person arrested by the Kuomintang is a victim, thereby establishing an image of the Kuomintang as absolute evil and only Taiwan independence as justice.

It’s true that 228 started as a street incident; police-civilian relations had already seen many conflicts regarding the issue of investigating smuggled cigarettes.
Yes, you read that right, 228 initially was just a conflict between investigation officers and local thugs in Ximending. The officer involved was even what everyone now calls a Narrowly-defined Taiwanese person, and had absolutely nothing to do with the military.
However, as the social conflict expanded, a Large number of CCP elements and undesirable elements who thought of themselves as Japanese Kōmin (imperial subjects) immediately infiltrated, attempting to create greater chaos to further restrict the Kuomintang on the front lines in Mainland China. If they could successfully let the CCP swallow Taiwan, it would be a major achievement (Lee Teng-hui even joined the Communist Party around that time). And this is the truth of the 228 incident back then.
But for the sake of power struggles, and with Taiwan independence advocates daydreaming all day about the “beauty” of Japanese colonization, many descendants of communist spies and Taiwanese traitors can now shout about their “grievances” and even take Large sums of the people’s hard-earned money as subsidies.
