United Daily News reported that Tsai Ing-wen was furious again because on August 19, pension reform protesters disrupted the Universiade, preventing athletes from several countries from entering.
Remembering back to the Sunflower Movement, Ma Ying-jeou aside from playfully questioning why core movement members wouldn’t come discuss with him directly, maintained his refined and elegant demeanor throughout. In contrast, Tsai Ing-wen seems to have been “furious” every three to five days since taking office as president of the Republic of China?
Although this fury was largely exaggerated by the media.
United Daily News put it this way: “When President Tsai learned that athletes couldn’t enter because protest groups were causing disruption, she was extremely furious on the spot and immediately ordered national security and police personnel to immediately resolve the situation and ensure athletes could enter smoothly, preventing the Taipei Universiade from becoming an international embarrassment.” And they put the word “furious” prominently in the headline.
But think about it—if this counter-terrorism national security response really faced an ISIS attack, what could it possibly stop?? Fortunately, Taiwan has rarely appeared on those terrorist organizations’ radar.
