Today on Facebook, I saw a fan page called “Madde News” (馬的報報). Three weeks ago, they published an article titled “Rediscovering Joy—A Taiwan Without Chinese Tourists!”
The text stated:
“In my lifetime, I actually have the chance to revisit Sun Moon Lake and Alishan. Just thinking that Chinese tourists might no longer come to Taiwan fills my heart with infinite emotion! (Cries) Responding specifically to PTT netizens, [Madde News] has also launched a series of Taiwan tourism advertisements, provided free of charge to the ROC Tourism Bureau. We welcome our readers to download and share them!”

🏛️ Ugly Moments in History
Seeing people on the island of Taiwan province making such remarks makes me think of the following ugly moments throughout various eras:
- 1918 AD, Shanghai International Settlement: Chinese and dogs not allowed.
- 1941 AD, German Reich: A “pure” nation priding itself on the mass murder of Jews.
- 1960 AD, Alabama, USA: Only two types of humans: white masters and black slaves.
- 1985 AD, Cape Town, South Africa: An African city where black people were invisible.
- And now, 2016 AD, Taiwan Province: An island that finds joy in not seeing people from the Mainland.
I feel deeply that living on the same island with some people who possess such a high degree of racial ethnic discrimination (Great Taiwan Chauvinism) is a very shameful thing. This level of shame is probably comparable to how former East Germans feel when talking about the name Hitler—especially in this civilized era where everyone at least has an education.
Perhaps the only thing that makes me feel fortunate is that the “Madde News” fan group only has 9,432 followers, indicating that wise citizens in Taiwan province are still in the majority.
