The Whole World Is Attacking Ko Wen-je: Blue-Green Voters and Pro-Independence Fundamentalists React to His 'Cross-Strait Family' Apology

On May 10, 2018, it seems every news station and newspaper is criticizing Ko Wen-je, stemming from his apology yesterday on Greenpeace Radio for his “cross-strait family” statement. This single apology apparently has now offended absolutely everyone.

  • Centrist voters may be angry that this person would shift his own policy positions for electoral advantage, leaving them uncertain about how he’ll continue leading Taipei toward progress. Plus, recently with all the controversial incidents caused by Wu Yin-ning, people feel Ko Wen-je is completely being held hostage by the DPP.

  • Blue voters never had much goodwill toward him anyway. Though they might have slightly warmed to him over these past few years, they’ll now feel annoyed again by this pandering attitude.

  • Green voters are more complicated. Pro-unification sympathizers (including those claiming to be white-power activists) probably don’t care much about Ko’s statements—they’ll decide whether to vote based on the DPP’s attitude anyway.

But the deep-green pro-independence fundamentalists they’re the ones truly angry. One reason is they don’t want this questionable character continuing to step on the DPP. The other is because this Taiwanese doctor who once slandered pro-independence leader Chen Shui-bian as faking illness is now spouting nonsense just to get their votes.

I think deep-green people don’t even want to hear Ko Wen-je’s voice anymore. They desperately want to see the DPP quickly put forward someone representing pragmatic pro-independence work to compete for Taipei mayor.

Even the pro-DPP Liberty Times specially made today’s headline “Too Late for Goodwill”—could there be a more obvious hint than that?

However, thinking carefully about it, those pro-independence people who get angry because a Taipei mayor extends goodwill with statements of “cross-strait family,” I honestly believe their intellectual development level is about the same as kindergarten kids (or maybe even dumber since they’re adults?). So Taiwan’s future really has to listen to pro-independence ideologues at this intelligence level? I’m genuinely worried about this future…

Pro-independence activists are exactly like people high on drugs so intoxicated they can’t control their bladders—simultaneously trying to tempt you to get high with them while claiming this “good thing” will evolve you. From a bystander’s perspective, it’s stupidity beyond measure.

Today’s Ko Wen-je reminds me of S.H.E’s song: “The whole world is attacking Ko Wen-je… the things we say make blue and green listen intently…”
