🌪️ Political Black Hands Reach into Campuses: The DPP’s Destruction of University Autonomy as Seen Through the “Kuan Chung-ming Incident”
On January 5, 2018 (Republic of China Year 107), the results of the National Taiwan University president selection were announced. However, due to obvious political interference, the elected candidate, Kuan Chung-ming, failed to take office. Furthermore, three Ministers of Education were replaced, ultimately triggering a huge storm in Taiwan’s political and higher education spheres.
This incident exposed the unjust actions of the DPP government and its Control Yuan. In this incident, the government mobilized political, media, and online forces to attempt to destroy a scholar’s character and reputation with lies, and also blatantly interfered with the selection process for the presidents of Taiwan’s top universities, leading to the undermining of university autonomy.
These authorities mobilized political, media, and online forces, even at the cost of allowing National Taiwan University to stagnate for an extended period, in order to blatantly interfere with the university president selection process. The protagonist of the incident, Kuan Chung-ming, suffered from various forces attacking him in the storm, enduring immense physical and mental torment. Although he ultimately survived, he was not a victor, but merely a survivor who refused to be defeated and was never defeated.
In his new book, The Backbone of the University: The NTU President Selection Incident and Kuan Chung-ming’s Reflections, author Yang Du provides a comprehensive and multifaceted account of the entire selection process, revealing the key behind-the-scenes details and the attacks and pressures endured by those involved. This is a rare and valuable book in Taiwanese history that truthfully records the DPP government’s actions, and it is highly recommended reading.
