⚔️ Striking Back at the “Independent Director” Controversy: Exposing the Political Smear Behind the “Stop Kuan” Campaign
Actually, according to National Taiwan University’s presidential selection regulations, the conflict-of-interest clause doesn’t even require candidates to disclose independent director positions. Some pro-DPP supporters, opposing just for the sake of opposing, keep finding excuses. If you’ve received rigorous scientific training, would you believe such excuse-hunting?
Produce the evidence and settle it, or you’re just spreading baseless rumors. But Taiwan certainly doesn’t lack this kind of non-progressive rumor-monger.
I believe some people see “independent director” and think it sounds corporate-y, so following the woke youth playbook they just get angry. The truth is these woke activists abandoned their intelligence long ago when the DPP led them in opposing nuclear power. They probably don’t even understand what an independent director’s role is.
Independent directors in corporations cannot involve themselves in business operations—it’s a newer role designed purely as a supervisory monitor. Since they have no direct financial interest, there’s obviously no conflict-of-interest issue.
If you ask me, Tsai Ing-wen, as the Tsai family princess, should have her siblings and relatives fully disclose all their assets.
If Kuan Chung-ming’s single independent director position—which doesn’t even constitute a conflict-of-interest—causes such a storm over his NTU presidency, then I honestly don’t see how Tsai Ing-wen has any qualification to be President of the Republic of China.
In fact, whenever you see articles on pro-DPP media or by pro-DPP supporters attacking Kuan Chung-ming (they play too many online games), every single source raising concerns about Kuan’s legitimacy only dares use “questions”—never statements.
What’s funny is that National Taiwan University has already re-examined the matter and issued an official statement confirming that all pro-DPP supporters’ concerns were false—it was all slander and mud-slinging. Yet pro-DPP supporters completely ignore this and continue arguing for their “beliefs,” even though those beliefs are now dirtied and look stupid.
At times like this, I always think: people used to say you can’t wake someone pretending to sleep; I’d add: people slinging mud first have to get themselves dirty.
Those who like to spread rumors, slander, and throw mud have already stopped caring about truth and falsehood—they even hope everyone becomes equally dirty so they feel better.
