💔 Moral Performance and Absence of Reason: Refusing Donations Needs No Reason, and Certainly No Public Statement!

The recent major earthquake in Nepal sparked a heated discussion in Taiwan about donations and aid. Among these discussions, some peculiar voices always emerged.

Today, a friend, referred to as Male A, published a public post on Facebook, the core 주장 of which was:

“I am not donating money to Nepal this time. Anyway, the Nepalese government itself said they don”t need Taiwan”s compassion, so why bother embarrassing ourselves? Plus, I don”t want my compassion to become someone else”s year-end bonus.”

🙅 What kind of mindset is behind a “public statement” refusing donations?

I have always believed that if you don”t want to donate, that”s fine; it”s your personal freedom and choice. But what kind of mindset is it to publicly advocate the idea of not wanting to donate?

Moreover, the reasons he listed, which were obtained from media information or negative social rumors (such as corrupt organizations, low efficiency, etc.), are even more laughable. Is Male A so lacking in others” approval? Is he seeking a sense of “anti-mainstream” identity, or trying to find a high-sounding excuse for his “inaction”?

In fact, whether you donate or not, NO ONE CARES. The people who truly care are those in the disaster zone, who have lost their homes. There is really no need to publicly declare that you are not donating to achieve some sort of self-righteous moral superiority.

📌 Distinguishing Between “Empathy” and “Negative Delusions”

Donating has never been anyone”s responsibility or obligation. It is an expression of empathy for those suffering, when one has sufficient ability.

This empathy requires us to focus on the suffering victims.

However, many people completely shift their focus:

  • True Motivation: Not wanting to spend money.
  • Public Excuses: The Nepalese government is unappreciative, fear of corruption, inefficiency.

As a result, you don”t see the victims who need help; you only see the unseen negative delusions. You over-interpret fragmented media information, using the worst predictions to justify your inaction.

So, whether this is your wisdom in predicting corruption or the stupidity of hearsay can only be judged by your own conscience.

⚔️ A True Hero Needs No Excuses

If your rational judgment is that the money would be of little use and you decide not to donate, that”s acceptable. But a true hero should frankly accept the fact of their unwillingness to contribute, without needing to weave or cite a set of “clever” reasons to defend themselves.

If you don”t want to donate, don”t; no need for excuses. This is true honesty and inner strength. Basing one”s benevolence on suspicion and exaggeration of media information only makes you appear more cowardly and foolish.
