Many people wonder: if the Republic of China is already the Republic of China, why bother regressing to the path of 70 years ago and struggling desperately to merge or unify with the People’s Republic of China? Conversely, some see the idea of “Taiwan independence” as a joke, as childish and ridiculous as “Shezi Island Independence.”
Regardless, since both the unification camp and the independence activists have been creating quite a stir on this issue, some independence activists claim that many Taiwanese are just cowards who lack the resolve to bleed and sweat. They shout that “Brave Taiwanese” are willing to fight a war with the Mainland at any cost for the sake of establishing an independent country! Therefore, Taiwan Next Society decided to conduct a survey to ask everyone: to what extent are you willing to pay for the “dream” of the independence activists?
Statistical Survey Results
- Question Title: Taiwan Independence!! Are you willing to support independence, pick up a gun, put on a helmet, stand on the front lines, and guard the dream with your blood and life?
- Survey Period: June 4, 2017 – May 9, 2019.
- Total Respondents: 1,138 people.
- Results:
- “I am willing to defend Taiwan independence with my life.” – 150 people (13% of total).
- “I refuse to sell my life for fools.” – 948 people (83% of total).
- “I give up expressing an opinion; I’ll just go with the flow.” – 40 people (4% of total).
Remember, this survey is not based on the premise that “war is certain,” nor is it using war as a threat against any pro-independence will, nor is it discussing whether unification, independence, or maintaining the status quo is better! This survey is merely a feasibility study. After all, anything is possible in the various political gambits. However, we completely disagree that absurdly childish ideas should exist within universal social values. If independence activists want to strive for their selfish dreams, they can no longer act like infants waiting for the protection and charity of “adults.” So we ask everyone: what are you truly willing to pay for a dream?
