Commentary on Hung Tzu-yung Belittling Huang Shih-hsiu: Calling Someone a 'Random Person with Zero Credibility' is Crude Populism and Sophistry

Hung Tzu-yung, the “great” legislator from the New Power Party, has recently been swamped by a controversy where she allegedly directed Taipower workers to prioritize certain residents during a typhoon. Responding to Huang Shih-hsiu’s counter-attack, she specifically told the media:

“Regarding false rumors, all he asks for is a simple apology and clarification. If the employee named Wang truly believed his original post was factual, he needn’t have deleted it, let alone find a random person with zero credibility; he simply needs to leave it for the courts to decide.”

🗣️ Crude Sophistry Techniques

Ms. Hung could have simply sued Huang Shih-hsiu along with the others—I’m sure human rights lawyer Chiu Hsien-chih wouldn’t mind the trouble. Instead, she chose to publicly label him a “random person with zero credibility.”

This is actually a very crude form of sophistry: using demeaning language to try and lower the perceived truth of an opponent’s words through irrationality. While this is an unrecognized form of discourse in most places, in the populist society of Taiwan, it seems to have become a mainstream academic pursuit.

❓ Where Did You Get This Illusion of “Credibility”?

Furthermore, when we ordinary citizens took to the streets to support Hung Tzu-yung and Hung Chung-chiu against the Ministry of National Defense, we were apparently just a group of “random people with zero credibility.” Does Hung Tzu-yung now think that becoming a “great legislator” suddenly endows her with more credibility?

Where exactly does Hung Tzu-yung get this confidence and illusion?

Credibility is built on a foundation of individual expertise and facts. From a professional standpoint, Huang Shih-hsiu, a graduate of Tsing Hua’s College of Science, is not necessarily inferior to Hung Tzu-yung, who graduated with a degree in Marketing and Distribution Management. As for the facts, the public can judge for themselves from the dashcam footage.

However, as soon as I hear the word “credibility” from Hung Tzu-yung’s mouth, I get the feeling that the “great legislator” hasn’t learned her lesson from her previous PM2.5 joke.
