TSMC's Morris Chang: Seven Tricks to Being a Leader

Every word is golden advice. Morris Chang, Chairman of TSMC, said: “To be a leader, there are essentially these seven tricks.” Let”s encourage each other.


Ⅰ. Calmness

  1. Don”t casually reveal your emotions.
  2. Don”t tell everyone your difficulties and experiences.
  3. Before soliciting others” opinions, think for yourself first, but don”t speak first.
  4. Don”t incessantly complain whenever you get a chance.
  5. For important decisions, try to consult with others, and it”s best to announce them a day later.
  6. Speak without any panic, and walk calmly too.
  7. Confidence is good, but don”t overlook anyone”s ideas.
  8. People are not high or low; don”t act arrogantly. Be polite to people and matters. You are no better than anyone else.

Ⅱ. Meticulousness

  1. Often ponder the cause-and-effect relationships of things happening around you.
  2. For problems that are not adequately addressed, uncover their fundamental root causes.
  3. For habitual ways of doing things, have suggestions for improvement or optimization.
  4. Develop the habit of being methodical and orderly in everything you do.
  5. Regularly find a few faults or drawbacks that others can”t see.
  6. Always be ready to fill in gaps wherever they arise.

Ⅲ. Courage

  1. Don”t frequently use phrases that lack confidence.
  2. Don”t frequently go back on your word or easily overturn decisions already made.
  3. In a crowd, don”t be indecisive when people are arguing endlessly.
  4. When the overall atmosphere is low, you need to be optimistic and positive.
  5. Do everything with dedication, because someone is watching you.
  6. When things don”t go well, take a break, look for a new breakthrough, and even if it ends, do so cleanly.

Ⅳ. Magnanimity

  1. Don”t intentionally turn potential partners into opponents.
  2. Don”t fuss over others” minor mistakes or errors.
  3. Be generous with money, learn the three kinds of giving (material giving, Dharma giving, fearless giving).
  4. Don”t have the arrogance of power or the prejudice of knowledge.
  5. All results and achievements should be shared with others.

Ⅴ. Substance

  1. Learn knowledge in various fields, humbly observe your surroundings. Broaden your horizons.
  2. Understand yourself and cultivate your own aesthetic taste.
  3. Smile at life. Laziness is unacceptable. Cultivate healthy living habits.
  4. Don”t do anything blindly. Have goals.
  5. Don”t just focus on inner beauty; outer beauty is also very important.
  6. Don”t spend all day on the computer, playing boring things.
  7. Judge rationally, learn to control emotions.

Ⅵ. Integrity

  1. Don”t say what you can”t do; if you say it, strive to do it.
  2. Don”t constantly mouth empty slogans or catchphrases.
  3. Stop all “immoral” means.
  4. Playing clever tricks is unacceptable!

Ⅶ. Responsibility

  1. When reviewing any mistake, start by reflecting on yourself or your own people.
  2. After a matter is concluded, first examine the faults, then list the merits.
  3. For a plan, consider the whole picture and plan for the future.
  4. Courageously bear the losses caused by responsibility.
