Due to the protests by groups opposing pension reforms, the empty stands inside the Universiade opening ceremony contrasted sharply with the crowds outside fighting for their ideals.
Predictably, party-affiliated media outlets began condemning the use of smoke bombs, confrontations with police, and the obstruction of athletes’ entry, labeling these actions as an “international disgrace” for the Republic of China (R.O.C.).
Setting aside the fact that such protests occur frequently on the global stage, those who scream “disgrace” are the ones truly showcasing a lack of international perspective.
🏟 The Vanishing Dome and the Forgetful Taiwanese
When speaking of embarrassment, perhaps everyone has forgotten one thing: the hosting of the World University Games in Taipei had already lost its dignity long ago.
To say that the Taiwanese people are forgetful and easily fooled is never an understatement.
People seem to have forgotten that when the R.O.C. bid for the Universiade, it promised the international community and the athletes that the competitions would take place in a world-class Taipei Dome (Big Dome).
However, under the self-proclaimed professional leadership of Ko Wen-je, the Taipei Dome remains in a state of confusing limbo—unable to live with dignity, yet unwilling to die cleanly.
But then again, if the DPP and the Tsai Ing-wen administration can betray their own nation’s civil servants (through pension reforms), what does it matter to them if they play tricks on foreigners??
